Course Description
Through participation in the course, Introduction to Global Health, the student will gain a baseline understanding of the major issues facing global health today. This multi-disciplinary course will provide the student with a broad overview of critical topics such as globalization and health, global health governance, clinical tropical medicine, non-communicable diseases and global health, tobacco control, migration and health, climate change and health of populations, and other topics. The course will consist of lectures, small group case studies, expert Q and A, and journal article discussion groups. Assessment will be a take home 1500-2000 word referenced paper synthesizing the experiences and material covered in the course. The course fee will support travel and associated fees to participate in one of either two field experiences. A domestic field experience to CDC and the Carter Center in Atlanta and an international field experience to Tanzania. Both field experiences will allow the student the opportunity to meet with an expert in various areas of global health. The Seminar Series will introduce UF medical school students to others working collaboratively in public health or global health settings and/or pursuing a career of clinical service, research, teaching, or policy- making to address the needs of an increasingly globalized world.
